Black box insurance

Black box insurance, a telematics policy, is available for both new and younger drivers, as well as more experienced drivers looking to save money.

When you take out a black box insurance policy, they’ll send you a box to fit. When you download the app, you’ll be able to see your driver score.

Your driver score is based on 5 factors:

  • Acceleration
  • Braking
  • Night driving (7pm – 6am. If you’re a night driver it may not be worth getting a Black box)
  • Speeding
  • Urban driving (35mph zones or below)

If someone else drives your car, their driving will impact your score as there isn’t an option to flag that a different driver is using your car.

If selected, you’ll also get free RAC breakdown cover and free legal cover. [3]

How to make changes to or cancel RAC car insurance

If you need to make changes (such as adding a driver) or cancel your policy, you can do so with the RAC insurance contact number:

  • 0330 159 1031 (Monday to Friday: 8am – 8pm, Saturday: 8am – 6pm, Sundays and Bank holidays: 10am – 4pm)

If you cancel within 14 days of receiving policy documentation, you will be charged an arrangement fee and for your time on cover. If you cancel after more than 14 days, you’ll be charged a fee and for time on cover.

For black box policies, if you cancel within 14 days of receiving policy documentation, you will be charged for the cost of your time being insured plus a fee of £35.

If you cancel after this period and your box has been professionally installed, you’ll be charged a fee of £125. If it has been self-installed, the charge will be £75. [3]
