What is the London LEZ Charge?

Separate from the Ultra Low Emission Zone (ULEZ), the LEZ was introduced to encourage the most polluting heavy diesel vehicles driving in London to become cleaner. The LEZ covers most of Greater London and is in operation 24 hours a day, every day of the year.

Currently, the only vehicles liable to pay the LEZ Charge are:

  • Vans or specialist diesel vehicles (over 1.205 tonnes unladen weight up to 3.5 tonnes gross vehicle weight), and minibuses (up to 5 tonnes) which do not meet Euro 3 standards.
  • HGVs, lorries, vans and specialist heavy vehicles over 3.5 tonnes as well as buses/minibuses and coaches over 5 tonnes which do not meet Euro 4 (NOx and PM) standards, but meet Euro 4 (PM).
  • HGVs, lorries, vans and specialist heavy vehicles over 3.5 tonnes as well as buses/minibuses and coaches over 5 tonnes which do not meet Euro 4 (PM) standards.

How much is the London LEZ charge?

The charge you'll need to pay is dependant on your vehicle type, and ranges between £100-£300.

  • £100 - Vans or specialist diesel vehicles (over 1.205 tonnes unladen weight up to 3.5 tonnes gross vehicle weight), and minibuses (up to 5 tonnes) which do not meet Euro 3 standards.

Fines for the London LEZ

If you forget to pay the LEZ Charge, you'll get a Penalty Charge Notice (PCN) of up to £2000, depending on your vehicle type. This will be halved if paid within 14 days.

London LEZ charge exemptions

Only a small number of vehicles are entitled to an exemption from the Low Emission Zone (LEZ). These are:

  • Specialist vehicles designed and built for mainly off-road use, but which may use the road for limited purposes (including agricultural and forestry tractors, mowing machines, agricultural and farm machinery and equipment, mobile cranes and road and building construction machinery)
  • Vehicles built before 1 January 1973
  • Vehicles with historic tax class
  • Vehicles operated by the Ministry of Defence

If your vehicle meets any of the above criteria and is registered in the UK, it is automatically exempt.

Some showman's vehicles are eligible for a 100% discount from the LEZ daily charge. However, this discount is not automatic and must be applied for on the TfL site.
