Separate from the Ultra Low Emission Zone (ULEZ), the LEZ was introduced to encourage the most polluting heavy diesel vehicles driving in London to become cleaner. The LEZ covers most of Greater London and is in operation 24 hours a day, every day of the year.
Currently, the only vehicles liable to pay the LEZ Charge are:
The charge you'll need to pay is dependant on your vehicle type, and ranges between £100-£300.
Charges apply daily, so if you're entering and exiting the zone multiple times on the same day, you will only need to pay once.
If you forget to pay the LEZ Charge, you'll get a Penalty Charge Notice (PCN) of up to £2000, depending on your vehicle type. This will be halved if paid within 14 days.
Only a small number of vehicles are entitled to an exemption from the Low Emission Zone (LEZ). These are:
If your vehicle meets any of the above criteria and is registered in the UK, it is automatically exempt.
Some showman's vehicles are eligible for a 100% discount from the LEZ daily charge. However, this discount is not automatic and must be applied for on the TfL site.
The LEZ covers most of Greater London, including parts of the M1 and M4 motorways (but not the M25).
The boundaries of the LEZ are well sign-posted with blue, green or white signs.
The fastest way to pay the charge is with Caura. Download the app for free and enter your vehicle registration number. Tap 'City Charges', select the charge and pay using Apple Pay, Google Pay, credit or debit card. No additional service charge or fees.
If you travel into the zone frequently, you can set-up AutoPay for even faster payments. It's free to set-up and it means Caura will automatically take payment each time you drive in the zone.
