What are Blackwall Tunnel charges

Starting 7 April 2025, TfL will implement road charges to manage traffic flow, cover construction expenses, and fund ongoing maintenance. These charges apply to both the Silvertown and Blackwall Tunnels.

You can drive straight through and pay the Blackwall tunnel fee on your phone. Easy.
Blackwall Tunnel charging times

Charges for using the Blackwall Tunnel will apply every day from 06:00 to 22:00 (except Christmas Day)

  • Peak hours:
    • Northbound: Monday to Friday, 06:00 – 10:00
    • Southbound: Monday to Friday, 16:00 – 19:00
  • Off-peak hours:
    • All other times between 06:00 and 22:00, outside of peak periods
    • No charge applies overnight between 22:00 and 06:00
How much to use the Blackwall Tunnel?

While specific rates are subject to confirmation, proposed charges are as follows:​

  • Cars and Small Vans:
    • Peak (Monday to Friday, 06:00-10:00 northbound; 16:00-19:00 southbound): £4.00
    • Off-Peak: £1.50 (only available with Auto Pay)
  • Motorcycles:
    • Peak: £2.50
    • Off-Peak: £1.50 (only available with Auto Pay)
  • Large Vans:
    • Peak: £6.50
    • Off-Peak: £2.50 (only available with with Auto Pay)
  • Heavy Goods Vehicles (HGVs):
    • Peak: £10.00
    • Off-Peak: £5.00 (only available with Auto Pay)
Fines for the Blackwall Tunnel

If you don’t pay the toll charge by midnight on the third day after you use the tunnel – or forget to pay entirely – you’ll get a fine of £180, reduced to £90 if you pay within 14 days.

Blackwall Tunnel toll exemptions

Exemptions:

  • Taxis
  • Blue Badge holders
  • Wheelchair-accessible and 'Zero-Emission Capable' private hire vehicles licensed by TfL
  • NHS staff and patients eligible through the NHS reimbursement scheme
  • Accredited breakdown/recovery vehicles

Discounts:

  • 50% discount for low-income drivers in 12 east and southeast London boroughs and the City of London
  • £1 discount on the standard off-peak charge for at least one year for small businesses, sole traders, and charities registered in Tower Hamlets, Newham, and Greenwich
What roads does the Blackwall Tunnel use?

The Blackwall Tunnel connects the A102 Blackwall Tunnel Approach on the Greenwich Peninsula south of the River Thames to the East India Dock Road (A13) in Blackwall, East London, north of the river.

How do I know if I need to pay the Blackwall Tunnel toll?

Roads approaching the tunnels will be clearly sign-posted, but there's no payment barrier or booth, so you'll need to be aware that you've used the crossing, and it's then your responsibility to pay the toll charge.
